While these everyday kitchen staples are generally safe in normal amounts, consuming them in extreme quantities can lead to severe illness or even death.
1. Nutmeg
This common spice contains myristicin,
a natural compound with hallucinogenic properties.
- The Danger: Consuming as little as 2 teaspoons
can be toxic to the body.
- The Effect: Overeating nutmeg can lead to
hallucinations, "nutmeg psychosis," convulsions, seizures, and
heart palpitations. In extreme cases, large doses can be fatal.
2. Bitter Almonds
Unlike the sweet almonds found
in snack aisles, bitter almonds contain high levels of amygdalin, which
the body converts into cyanide.
- The Danger: Eating just 7 to 10 raw bitter almonds
can cause serious problems for adults and can be fatal for children.
- The Effect: Ingesting between 10 and 70 wild bitter
almonds can be lethal for a healthy adult.
3. Green or Sprouting Potatoes
Potatoes contain glycoalkaloids
(such as solanine), which are toxic substances the plant uses for defense.
- The Danger: These toxins build up in potatoes that
have turned green, aged, or begun to sprout.
- The Effect: Consuming high amounts can cause cramping,
diarrhea, confusion, coma, and death. Just 3 to 6 mg per kilogram
of body weight can be fatal.
4. Rhubarb Leaves
While rhubarb stalks are a
popular dessert ingredient, the leaves are strictly non-edible due to high
concentrations of oxalic acid.
- The Danger: Oxalic acid binds to calcium, potentially
causing kidney stones and interfering with bone growth.
- The Effect: While it would take approximately 11
pounds of leaves to be fatal for an adult, smaller amounts can cause
vomiting, seizures, breathing difficulties, and coma.
5. Star Fruit
For most people, star fruit is
a healthy snack, but it contains a potent neurotoxin that is dangerous for
those with certain health conditions.
- The Danger: People with kidney disease cannot
filter out the toxins found in this fruit.
- The Effect: In individuals with compromised kidney
function, the toxin can cause mental confusion, seizures, and death.
Safety Tip: Always avoid eating the pits
or seeds of stone fruits (like cherries and apricots) and apple cores in large
quantities, as they also contain cyanide-producing compounds
